Once you've downloaded the installation file on ThemeForest, extract it and locate a file called katrien.zip. You can install the theme by using one of two installation methods:

1. WordPress upload:

1. Login to WordPress Admin and browse to "Appearance > Themes".
2. Click on the "Add New" button and click "Upload Theme".
3. Click on "Choose File" and select katrien.zip file.
4. Click on "Install Now".
5. When your theme is successfully installed, click "Activate" to activate the newly installed theme.

2. FTP upload:

1. Using FTP client, login to the server where your WordPress website is hosted.
2. Using FTP client, navigate to the /wp-content/themes/ directory under your WordPress website's root directory.
3. Using FTP client, upload the katrien directory to themes directory on remote server.
4. Once uploaded, navigate to "Dashboard > Appearance > Themes" in the WordPress Dashboard and hit "Activate" below your newly uploaded theme.

When you use first or second method, please make sure that you're uploading the katrien.zip file (for first method) or katrien folder (for second method), not entire package you downloaded. If you upload the wrong file you will get an error stating “Error: missing style.css stylesheet.”

Once installation is complete, your Katrien theme will be ready to use. You should now see Katrien theme as active.

Note: If you have existing content and featured images, you will have to install "Regenerate Thumbnails" plugin and run it from "Tools > Regenerate Thumbnails".

Regenerate Thumbnails

If you already had images in your Media Library when you installed Katrien, you will have to resize your image thumbnails. Follow these instructions:

1. Go to "Appearance > Install Plugins" and install "Regenerate Thumbnails" plugin.
2. Next, go to "Tools > Regenerate Thumbnails".
3. Click the "Regenerate All Thumbnails" button. It will take some time depending on the number of images you have. Do not close your browser.

When you first install the theme you'll see a popup on your dashboard from the theme asking you to install a number of plugins.

Allow the theme to install these for you.

If it's a fresh site (or a test site) with no content, it's a good idea to import demo content to get you started. You don't need to do it on a live production site as it will import several posts, pages, and images.

Demo content can be installed in two ways:

1. Manual Demo Import

We have created a folder labeled Demo_Content which contains an export for the Live Preview.

1. Log-in to your WordPress backend and open your WordPress importer "Tool > Import > WordPress".
2. Click on "Choose file" and select the demo-content.xml.
3. Check the box "Download and import file attachments". This will download attachments for images included in the Live Preview demo.
4. Click "Upload file and import".

You now just need to wait for the importer to finish. This might take a few minutes depending on your hosting server speed.

2. One Click Demo Import

Before you begin, make sure "One Click Demo Import" plugin is activated.

If you want to install demo content automatically with "One Click Demo Import" plugin, please follow these steps below:

1. Go to "Appearance > One Click Demo Import".
2. Select which demo you want to install and click "Import" button below it.
3. Just wait a couple of minutes and everything will be done.

After the installation is done all pages, portfolio items and posts will be imported correctly, menus and pages will be setted.

Important notice: The images on the demo site are not included in your purchase from ThemeForest, there are only for the demo site. Therefore, after installing the demo content, the images will not be there.

Customize area is one of the main feature in our theme. They give you abilities to made a changes to your site without touching a single line of code.

"Customize" give you an ability to live preview changes on the site. In this field you can change a theme's layout, customize menus and widgets and other. You can go to theme customize at "Appearance > Customize" section from WordPress admin area.

To set up site logo:

1. Go to "Appearance > Customize > Site Identity > Logo".
2. Under Logo Image, click "Select Image" button.
3. Select logo from your Media Library or upload new image.
4. Click "Publish" button.

To set up primary menu view:

1. Go to "Appearance > Customize > Header Settings ".
2. In "Primary Menu View" select "Classic Menu" or "Overlay Menu".
3. Click "Publish" button.

Setting up Navigation Menus works normally as it does for any WordPress Theme. If you're new to WordPress, you can learn more about menus in this article.

To create and activate your new menu follow the steps below:

1. Log in to that site as an administrator.
2. Go to "Appearance > Menus" panel.
3. Give your menu a name and click "Create Menu" button.
4. Add few simple links from "Custom Links" tab.
5. Save your menu.
6. Navigate to "Manage Locations" tab (at the top of the screen).
7. Choose your new menu as "Primary Menu" or "Secondary Menu".
8. Save changes.

Social Menu

To enable social menu in the Footer you need to set up your Social Links Menu:

1. Go to "Appearance > Customize > Menus".
2. Click "Create New Menu" button.
3. Add name for this menu (Social Links, for example).
4. In "Menu Locations" select "Social Menu" and click "Next" button.
5. Click "Add Items" button and in "Custom Links" type link to your social profile.
6. Click "Add to Menu" button.
7. Add other links to your social profiles.
8. Click "Publish button".

To set up a simle blog page:

1. Go to "Appearance > Customize > Blog Settings ".
2. Select one of posts list layouts to display.
3. Click "Publish" button.

Katrien comes with styled default WordPress widgets.

How to use widgets

1. Go to "Appearance > Widgets".
2. Expand the box, where you would like to place your widget, by clicking on the arrow icon next to it.
3. Drag & drop the widget you wish to use, in the expanded area below the box.
4. Fill in the information necessary and click "Save".

The sidebar locations in the theme are referenced below

1. Sidebar: Appears to the right of the main content.

Footer is best used for simple copyright message.

1. Go to "Appearance > Customize > Footer Area Settings".
2. Enter your Copyright Message and click "Publish" button.

Katrien comes with a plugin "Uka Portfolio", which is responsible for adding portfolio functionality to the site.

When you first install the theme you'll see a popup on your dashboard from the theme asking you to install a number of plugins. Install the plugin "Uka Portfolio", if you need such functionality.

After activating the plugin in the admin panel of your site will be a section "Portfolio", where you can add your projects and set up categories with tags for them.

A list of your projects will be available at: yoursite.com/portfolio.

To set your portfolio as your home page:

1. Add a new page to your site and name it "Showcase".
2. Go to "Dashboard > Appearance > Customize > Homepage Settings" and select "A static page" for "Your homepage displays".
3. Select your new page "Showcase" for "Homepage" and any other page for "Posts page".
4. When add or edit portfolio item check "Add item to the showcase page" checkbox to display item at showcase page.
5. That's all. Now the main page of your website will display selected projects from your portfolio.

In addition, the plugin "Uka Portfolio" has several settings:

• You can select the layouts for your portfolio and showcase pages.
• You can select the number of items on the portfolio and showcase page.
• You can select display comments on the portfolio item page or not.
• You can select the meta boxes that will be displayed on the portfolio item page.

To set up this go to "Dashboard > Appearance > Customize > Portfolio Settings" and customize layouts, or go to "Dashboard > Settings > Portfolio" and change other options.

If you try to view the portfolio and get a 404 error, you should update the permalinks. Go to "Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks" and click button "Save Changes".

Our theme can work with GreenSock animations (GSAP), but since GSAP can only be used for free in certain cases, we did not include this library in our theme. If you plan to use it, you need to do it yourself.

To do this, you need to perform just a few simple steps:

1. First of all, read the license under which this library is distributed.
2. Then, download the library.
3. Unpack the downloaded archive and go to the gsap-public\minified folder.
4. Find the files in it EasePack.min.js and gsap.min.js and copy them to the assets\js\vendors folder of the theme.
5. Go to "Appearance > Customize > Animations > GreenSock Animations" and select "Enable GreenSock Animations".
6. That's all.

The theme can display images and galleries in pop-up windows.

To display an image in a pop-up window, when inserting an image block, add the "popup-image" class to it.

To display the gallery in a pop-up window, when inserting a gallery block, link it to media file and add the "popup-gallery" class to it.

The theme can display images with a parallax effect. To do this, you need to set the block with the image full width alignment and the "has-parallax"class.

If you are in need of the update, download the current build from ThemeForest to install the updated theme.

FTP Updating

If you have not customized the original theme files then you may simply drop the updated theme folder contents into the theme folder on your server – which is located in wp-content/themes/katrien.

If you wish to upload the entire updated theme as a separate theme, ensure you:

• Rename the updated theme’s folder (different from the current theme).
• Drop the renamed theme folder into wp-content/themes.
• Switch to the new theme via your WordPress Dashboard.

If you choose to upload the whole theme and switch to it, you may lose your Theme Customizer data and will have to add those back in.

FTP Selective Updating

On the other hand, if you have customized some files in the core theme contents, you should consider selective updating, which simply means updating only the files that are pointed out in the theme’s changelog.

There are a couple programs out there that will allow you to compare versions of files, in order to catch customizations you may not remember. Some recommended programs are WinMerge (Windows), Kaleidoscope (OSX), and handy GitHub (OSX) & (Windows).

Overall, the safest and cleanest way to update your theme is to leave your currently modified theme on your server/site as is, rename the folder of the newly updated theme, upload the new theme, and modify that to match your original custom work. In this way, if something has gone wrong with the new version, you’re just a few clicks away from getting things back to how they originally were.

A child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality and styling of another theme, called the parent theme. Child themes are the recommended way of modifying an existing theme.

Why use a Child Theme?

There are one main reason why you would want to use a child theme: If you modify a theme directly and it is updated, then your modifications WILL be lost. By using a child theme you will ensure that your modifications are preserved.

Installing the Child theme

Log in to your site's administration panel, and go to "Administration Panels > Appearance > Themes". Click "Add New" and follow the directions to upload the katrien-child.zip file, located in the katrien_theme folder.

Next simply click "Activate" and both the Katrien theme and Katrien child theme will be active on your WordPress site. Now you're ready to customize away.

Customizing Template Files

If you want to change more than just the stylesheet, your child theme can override any file in the parent theme: simply include a file of the same name in the child theme directory, and it will override the equivalent file in the parent theme directory when your site loads.

For instance, if you want to change the PHP code for the site header, you can include a header.php in your child theme's directory, and that file will be used instead of the parent theme's header.php.

Child Theme Functions.php

Unlike style.css, the functions.php file of a child theme does not override its counterpart from the parent. Instead, it is loaded in addition to the parent’s functions.php. (Specifically, it is loaded right before the parent’s file.)

In that way, the functions.php of a child theme provides a smart, trouble-free method of modifying the functionality of a parent theme.

Adding PHP Functions

Say that you want to add a PHP function to your theme. The fastest way would be to open the katrien/functions.php file and put the function there... But that’s not smart: The next time Katrien is updated, your function will disappear (as the entire contents of the katrien folder are replaced upon an update).

However, there is an alternative way which is the smart way: you can create a child theme, add a functions.php file in it, and add your function to that file. The function will do the exact same job from there too, with the advantage that it will not be affected by future updates of the parent theme.

Do not copy the full content of functions.php of the parent theme into functions.php in the child theme. It's not a good practice by any means.

Modifiying PHP Functions

You can use this same exact methodology to modify functions that are within the parent theme's files. Let's take a quick look at an example.

Below is an example of a typical function within most of our WordPress themes - a template tag that displays the entry date.

You would find this function (located in the katrien/inc/template-tags.php file) then copy it over to the child theme like such:

And then edit it as you see fit. This function will load before the one in the theme, which is pluggable — that is, replaceable by a child theme — conditionally.

Theme supports the following plugins:

Contact Form 7

"Contact Form 7" can manage multiple contact forms, plus you can customize the form and the mail contents flexibly with simple markup.

Installing "Contact Form 7" can be done either by searching for "Contact Form 7" via the "Plugins > Add New" screen in your WordPress dashboard or by using the following steps:

1. Download the plugin via WordPress.org.
2. Upload the ZIP file through the "Plugins > Add New > Upload" screen in your WordPress dashboard.
3. Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu in WordPress.

Settings:

1. Go to "Contact > Contact Forms" and edit your contact form.
2. Copy your contact form shortcode.
3. Go to "Pages > Add New", add title for page and insert this shortcode to page text field.
4. Press "Publish" button. Contact form will be displaying on this page.
